In Episode 16 of the Everyday Geo podcast, the first podcast interview of 2018, I get to discuss Open Source with Michael Miller. Mike is an independent contractor who has been programing and working with open source software for several years. While starting off in programing he began his move to the geospatial realm in college with the use of the technology in wildlife biology and monitoring animal movements and things took off from there. Working for a few years in the environmental field as an analyst and programmer Mike focused on how to use a combination of commercial and open source software to help those working out in the field to get the job done. The author of a few open source course on Udemy, Mike continues his work with open source software in the hopes of working with non-profit organizations and groups that just can’t afford the higher end costs of commercial geospatial technologies.
