• Randy: Welcome to the Evoluntionaries Podcast, I’m Randy Harrington.
• Carmen: And I’m Carmen Voilleque.
• Randy: One of our favorite podcasts because we’re talking about our favorite thing.
• Carmen: We love it!
• Randy: We love it!
• Carmen: Why we love this stuff.
• Randy: We love this stuff. Or these ideas.
• Carmen: Yeah.
• Randy: Or these people.
• Carmen: Yeah.
• Randy: There’s all kinds of things …
• Carmen: We have a lot of love to spread around.
• Randy: We have, you know I’m real pleased we have more loves than we have bastas.
• Carmen: Ohh boy.
• Randy: That means that we’re evolving people. I think that we’re, we’re, we’re reaching a new stage of consciousness.
• Carmen: (laughs) You can track our progress over time.
• Randy: That’s right because I remember and I’m not gonna name dates, but I remember we’d sit down to do these podcasts and we had like 700 bastas, “Well what do you love?” “I don’t know, nothing” …
• Carmen: “I don’t know” (laughs) …
• Randy: “Yeah I got nothing”. And it’s just things like dislike left.
• Carmen: Right. (laughs) Alright, well we do have some, uh, great things.
• Randy: Go ahead and start, you’ve got a, you’ve got kind of a high, high brow one to start off with.
• Carmen: Yeah, I heard an interview with Richard Dawkins.
• Randy: He’s not the game show host.
• Carmen: He’s not though, he not. Uhh great scientist, um and he is out with a new book, The Appetite for Wonder.
• Randy: Love the name.
• Carmen: Appetite for Wonder.
• Randy: Love the name.
• Carmen: Uhh really. It’s a memoire of a scientist and he is really trying to focus on the magic that’s in reality. We don’t even have to have all these magical stories for kids about fairies and hobbits …
• Randy: You bet.
• Carmen: … and whatever that there is so much magic in science.
• Randy: You get into some quantum physics and you’re talking serious magic.
• Carmen: Yeah and, uh, that he believes in the magic science and that’s pretty cool.
• Randy: I, yeah …
• Carmen: So anyway, great interview, I am definitely …

• Randy: Appetite for Wonder. And I am just going to so a general shout out for anybody that crosses that barrier between the sciences and the general public. Whenever the general public …
• Carmen: (laughs) Anybody who can explain science.
• Randy: Well yeah, anybody who can create an appetite. Who was it, Alan Alder or whatever he had that whole special on explaining the science [0:02:00] and the cosmos.
• Carmen: And the universe.
• Randy: Carl Sagan, and any of these people …
• Carmen: You know, I watched Dancing with the Stars, I was on another Love It podcast, and I watched it with my daughter. And uh this season …
• Randy: I don’t think I’ve ever seen that.
• Carmen: This season, Bill Nye the Science Guy …
• Randy: Oh really?
• Carmen: Is on Dancing with the Stars.
• Randy: Well there you go.
• Carmen: And he got a standing ovation. He’s a terrible dancer. Terrible!
• Randy: (laughs) As well he should be. He’s busy with other things.
• Carmen: He dances like a science geek. Let’s just put it that way. And uh, standing ovation because people love that man.
• Randy: That’s a beautiful thing. And I’m, you know; let’s get more scientific in this country. We’re, we’re abandoning science. And it’s driving me up a wall.
• Carmen: I can see us rounding a corner from uh, Love It to bastas.
• Randy: Yeah, yeah.
• Carmen: Just like that.
• Randy: Oh geeze trust me. Well okay so that’s a good one. That was kind of a high brow one. So for me I’m gonna go right down into the pits. Um, I listen to a fair amount of Pandora Radio. Anybody else listen to Pandora Radio? Um, it’s just a cool service you know it’s like why didn’t we have this in the 60’s? It’s fabulous. So uh, my problem though is, is that I was getting pretty sick of all my Pandora stations. I listen to it so much I was sick of it. Now we’re in a bar in Woodstock, Vermont …
• Carmen: That’s right!
• Randy: Uh I can’t remember the name of it but it was a cool bar …
• Carmen: But it was as if you picked up a tap room out of Portland, Oregon and dropped it in the middle of Woodstock … It was …
• Randy: Right. Vermont is cool, uh I like okay …
• Carmen: Shut up! Shut up!
• Randy: Burlington, Vermont is one of the coolest towns ever.
• Carmen: If Randy were to design a little town in America it would be Burlington, Vermont.
• Randy: You’ve got your Ben & Jerry’s, you’ve got the cool walking mall, Lake Champlain, anyway. But uh I’m in the bar like we are and their music is just rocking and I’m just like wow, this music is just perfect! What is it? “Oh it’s Pandora”. Well what’s the station? “Oh I don’t know”. Finally the manager, hearing this, goes in the back, checks it, comes back out and he says, “The Radiators”. The Radiators? I don’t listen to The Radiators. I’m not even really sure who, I’d kind of heard of them but I didn’t know. Came back home, plopped The Radiators in to my Pandora [0:04:00] and I have been toe tappin’. Like I listen to Pandora when I cook.
• Carmen: Happy ever since.
• Randy: Oh my gosh it is like the best high end kind of fun, funky, restaurant blues, jazz, love it!
• Carmen: Cool! Alright.
• Randy: Ummmm … I kind of feel like I’ve got too many on this list.
• Carmen: It’s fall.
• Randy: It is fall.
• Carmen: It is fall. Welcome to fall. And uh, fall in our family means … Time to order your Halloween costumes!
• Randy: Oh that’s right! Yeah, yeah.
• Carmen: Because my daughter, it is, her favorite holiday is Halloween. That girl likes dressing up. So uh, we started looking at Halloween costumes in August.
• Randy: As well you should.
• Carmen: Yeah.
• Randy: Claire is in another level of Halloween costumes.
• Carmen: Chasing Fireflies is the name of the company. Chasing Fireflies. They have the best, absolutely no competition, costumes for kids.
• Randy: Yeah I looked at the website after you told me this and I agree. It’s a great website too, uh, Chasing Fireflies. These are cool ass costumes.
• Carmen: Yeah I, they did not have stuff like this when I was a kid.
• Randy: No!
• Carmen: I am, completely … wanna have a whole do over …
• Randy: Everything I wore was really flammable.
• Carmen: We had to make out own. We were always hobos. Remember the hobo? Tie a little bit of stuff from your bedroom around a stick.
• Randy: I never had a good costume.
• Carmen: Yeah well she has never not had a good costume. And it’s mostly due to Chasing Fireflies.
• Randy: Chasing Fireflies costumes for kids.
• Carmen: Yep.
• Randy: They do have some costumes for adults but clearly this uh, website is aimed at uh, kids. And they’re just spectacular. Zombies and vampires and pirates and uh, Cleopatra.
• Carmen: And then you’ve got all your fairy princesses and all that stuff too.
• Randy: Yeah fabulous.
• Carmen: Alright.
• Randy: Uh, so I’m in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago and we had a ball, my wife and I in New Orleans. We had just had a great time. And we love the art in New Orleans so we’re in a art gallery and I go, I wonder all the way upstairs into the place where obviously the artist works. And in the corner of this place is stacked with empty [0:06:00] boxes, each one labeled, “Gingeroo”. So I go back downstairs and I’m like, what the hell is Gingeroo? And it turns out the artist is an equity owner in uh the New Orleans, Historic New Orleans rum company. Or something like that. They have been making rum for a very, very long time.
• Carmen: Well I just happen to have a bottle of Gingeroo right here.
• Randy: Just happen to have a bottle of Gingeroo. What does it say on it?
• Carmen: Old New Orleans Crystal Rum.
• Randy: Old New Orleans. Old New Orleans Crystal Rum. So it turns out that Gingeroo is a beverage, it comes in uhh I don’t know, what is that? 20 some odd ounce bottle.
• Carmen: Wine bottle size.
• Randy: Wine bottle size. And uh, in the bottom of it is this ginger sediment that’s maybe 2 inches thick. And it’s sparkling cane sugar water with ginger and spices. And about 10 percent rum. So I immediately needed to have some of this.
• Carmen: Yeah.
• Randy: So we, we sought it out. It’s only sold in New Orleans. Wife and I go back; we have some other friends with us. We sat down; we had 2 bottles of Gingeroo between 4 of us. We power it down. It was a hot day, it was a hot day I’m saying. Now my wife is loving it. She’s drinking it going, “This is great! this is great”. She goes, “You know, I don’t feel a thing, I don’t feel a thing”. Well at the end of the bottle she goes like, “This is the best [inaudible 0:07:10] I’ve ever had.” Yeah, it was uh, but it truly is amazing. Gingeroo, uh, you can order it and have it shipped if you contact them. But I am a huge fan of the Gingeroo.
• Carmen: I just have to tell you this story which is so funny. When I got here uh I said, “Where’s Patty?” That’s Randy’s wife name. Where’s Patty? And, “Oh she’s on the elliptical. She’s doing her, her exercises.” And so you know about an hour and a half later, I mean I don’t know who can be on an elliptical that long, she finally comes out and she’s just covered in sweat. I said oh my gosh you’re amazing; you’re phenomenal I can’t believe this! And she said “Well, I like Gingeroo.”
• Randy: She was exercising so she could (laughs) [suck down 0:07:48] some Gingeroo. That is a classic Patty response.
• Carmen: What is this Gingeroo you speak of? That sounds magical stuff (laughs) alright. So we’ll get some Gingeroo.
• Randy: Yeah, Gingeroo is, is magnificent stuff. We also found an artist [0:08:00] that we love very much there. His name is Joshua Chambers; we think he’s on the way up. But that’s another story altogether. I found a couple of pieces of music I’m liking very much. I’m just going to come right out and say it, I think John Mayer’s new album, Paradise Valley, one of the best things I’ve heard in a long long time. Every cut on it is listenable. Uh, he’s been listening to a lot of Jerry Garcia apparently and that really shows up in the guitar work. It’s not the normal pop, bubble gummy crap that sometimes comes out of John Mayer. It’s a much more mature album. And I just think it’s terrific. Have you heard it yet?
• Carmen: No because he’s on my basta list as a human being.
• Randy: See I’ve heard this from other people.
• Carmen: Probably women.
• Randy: Give him a chance, man. Yeah give him a chance.
• Carmen: Yeah, right.
• Randy: Does he have a bad track record with uh …
• Carmen: Don’t you read People Magazine?
• Randy: No I don’t read any of that stuff.
• Carmen: Oh my gosh. And that’s another thing I love, People Magazine. That’s how you get your news. How else do you know what you need to know if you don’t read people Magazine?
• Randy: I know he had like a fling with Katy Perry.
• Carmen: Well times that by 100 other women and that’s about right.
• Randy: (laughs) Well this is a good album and I’m sticking with …
• Carmen: He does women wrong.
• Randy: With John Mayer. Well, okay but it’s still good music.
• Carmen: But it’s still good music.
• Randy: Here’s another guy, Jason Isbell. I-s-b-e-l-l. Jason Isbell. Apparently a guy who had serious drug and alcohol problems, been a musician forever. Finally cleans himself up and writes one album called Southeast and it is a stunning piece of work. If you are a guitarist at all you will love it. But the poetry that’s included in it, just go listen to the song “Elephant”. No I’m not kidding; it’ll blow your mind. You will, you will weep with joy at this. Jason Isbell, Southeast. Love it, love it, love it. Absolutely amazing.
• Carmen: Alright.
• Randy: Now you’ve been reading. You’ve turned me on to a book.
• Carmen: I’ve been reading um yes. And I’m not sure if you love it as much as I do, but you haven’t given it as much of a …
• Randy: I’ve read the first book.
• Carmen: So there’s like a bazillion books in this series. But I stumbled upon a character called Gabriel Allon [0:10:00].
• Randy: He’s a badass.
• Carmen: He is, he is. He’s an Israeli assassin.
• Randy: That is badass.
• Carmen: But he’s also, he is uh, one of the top, maybe count them on one hand, restorers of classical art. Yeah religious art. Big time stuff.
• Randy: Yeah crazy.
• Carmen: Sistine Chapel kind of stuff. Yeah, so …
• Randy: Total renaissance guy.
• Carmen: Yeah, yeah and loves art.
• Randy: He’s handsome.
• Carmen: He’s um, very delicate kind of guy. And then at the same time has this other side to him. And he is uh …
• Randy: Kind of brutal.
• Carmen: Sort of brutal. Check it out, his story.
• Randy: Written by who?
• Carmen: I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what, you don’t need to know because you just type in Gabriel Allon, A-l-l-o-n, into your little Kindle or you know, this crazy thing called the internet.
• Randy: Oh okay and there he is.
• Carmen: And I promise you that it will be the first thing that comes up.
• Randy: Alright, Gabriel Allon. I’ve read the first book, I found it a little sloggy uh in the middle. But only because they’re introducing cool characters. And I do believe …
• Carmen: Who pop up many times later.
• Randy: Yeah that they’re just setting up a long series. And I thought the book wound up very well.
• Carmen: If you don’t understand anything that’s going on in Syria right now, this will also help you.
• Randy: Lot of Middle Eastern history in this book. Yeah absolutely. Um, we’re both excited that Elementary, new season of Elementary is coming out.
• Carmen: Yay Elementary! That’s been on past Love It’s but we love it again. We double love it.
• Randy: Yeah we love it again. I’m actually looking forward to it. And then I think we’ve got to close out with this one. If you haven’t, checked this out.
• Carmen: (laughs) This is the best thing ever. I can’t get it out of my head.

• Randy: That was very good actually, that was very nice.

• Randy: And it’s a performance art by a guy named Ylvis and he spells his name Y-l-v-i-s.
• Carmen: He’s just cool like that.
• Randy: He’s just cool like that. But I have watched this video a dozen times. And it is the strangest most compelling thing …
• Carmen: (laughs) It’s brilliant though!
• Randy: It is absolutely, I’m so glad you think so.
