I wasn’t that aware of James as an individual, but was certainly aware of the legacy of many of the curatorial projects, predominantly in the North of England, it turns out he was very involved in. He happened to be in Leeds to chair a meeting which seemingly doesn’t happen very often - a public institution inviting artists in the city in to essentially just ask them how the institution could better help or benefit them. I was curious to find out more about how he ended up in this quite unique position of working in both artist and institutional development. Along the way I was very taken by how open and honest he was about his experiences, from the valuable influence of his mother to fears of failure, and even actual failure.

James N Hutchinson is an artist, curator and lecturer based in Glasgow, and is currently undertaking a PhD at Glasgow School of Art. He is a founding member of the curatorial cooperative Chapter Thirteen (2017-ongoing), and was a founding co-Director of the curatorial agency The Salford Restoration Office (2006-2010). His exhibition project Rumours of a New Planet will be shown at Collective Gallery, Edinburgh in 2018, and his web-project Archive is currently unfolding on Transmission Gallery's website.
