"My house will be called a house of prayer but you are making it a den of robbers." Jesus is referencing not the activity inside the temple but the mission outside the temple. Jesus isn't upset about commerce, He's upset that it has eliminated the place for outsiders to worship. The Church vs The Country Club A country club exists to meet my social, financial, and emotional desires and if it doesn't, I find a new one or add another one. A church exists to meet the deepest needs of everyone, not just those who are members. Jesus intentionally uses His life to reach those who are on the fringes. Romans 8:38 Jesus is greater than anything that keeps you on the outside.
