As a school we have high expectations for our students. We have the pleasure of seeing most of them live up to these high expectations. However, there are people that are exposed to our students who are surprised but what they see. This episode portrays just such a reaction.

Way too many people are talking at each other and few are listening well. The accepted norm today is that louder is more correct. We all know that this is not the case. The viewpoint that we espouse with greater volume while talking over someone else may indeed not be laced with truth, certainly not with kindness. Where has civility gone in our time? It seems as allusive as a tax being repealed by any level of government.

Thankfully, there is a glimmer of hope. Once again, the youth are beginning to emerge as having some solid things to say and in a way that we should listen to them. Listen as one of our students shares an experience in which he had the opportunity to talk with people outside of his normal circles and the reactions to a high school senior respecting those he engaged on such taboo topics as politics and religion. He dared to speak and listen with civility!
