I 1987 kom Toni Morrisons høyt aktede bok "Elskede" (Beloved). Morrison har, i sitt forfatterskap, vært opptatt av den amerikanske slavehistorien, om rasisme og kolonialisme, men også av kvinners stilling. Og Elskede er ikke noe unntak. Morrison vant Nobels litteraturpris i 1993 og er, i 2019, aktuell med en ny essaysamling kalt "The source of self-regard". I denne samtalen diskuterer forfatterne Tove Nilsen og Marjam Idriss Elskedes relevans til dagens politiske virkelighet, voldens historie og om boka egentlig noensinne var en grøsser.
