Tune in for this wonderful dialogue with Dr. Jeffrey Acido and a group of young men from K-VIBE to learn about the liberatory work they’re doing at this visionary bike shop. Opened in 2005 as part of K?kua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services' commitment to providing community-based health initiatives that honor the development of personal relationships and respect for cultural values, the Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (K-VIBE) uses bicycling to promote physical and emotional well-being by fostering healthy and sustainable relationships between youth leaders, the community and the land. We discuss how this popular educational space builds self-awareness among youth in Hawai‘i on the island of O‘ahu. In particular, find out about the Nakem pedagogy they practice. It’s an Indigenous Ilokano approach to teaching that values land, body, & language. With this practice, they’re encouraging folks to live a holistic healthy life that involves self-love and even healing masculinities. For more information about K-VIBE & their parent organization, please check out the following websites: K-VIBE: http://k-vibe.blogspot.com Kokua: Kalihi Valley http://kkv.net *I especially invite folks to check out this episode on YouTube so that you see the video-recording of our dialogue on-site at K-VIBE: https://youtu.be/sCQF1K3eOZs
