On this episode Fermenting Opinions, we are joined by one of the moderators of the Facebook group “Incelistan” and who is a self-professed “incel.” What does that mean? Glad you asked! Incel is sociological term that stands for “involuntary celibate” and embraced by those who describe themselves this way. The term gained notoriety in 2014 after Elliot Roger killed 6 people and wounded 14 others in the name of incels, earning himself the moniker of “The Supreme Gentleman.” On April 23, 2018, Alek Minassian killed 10 people and wounded 16 others after allegedly dedicating his attack Roger. Despite the violence, those identify as incels fall across a broad spectrum of beliefs within the accepted definition of the term. We attempt to gain a better understanding of the movement tonight by discussing this with our guest.
