Episode 62: Scorn of the Octopus and the Teacher

In this episode we discuss the Scorn of Octopus and the Teacher trial as we experienced it.

At it's core, this trial boils down to 2 things: can you beat the octopus, and can you burst the teacher? The fight comes in 2 phases, wave 1 is just a fight vs Orthros, who comes with his own challenges. Wave 2 is both Orthros and Typhon.

To beat Orthrus it's important to come prepared with a Physical Cover tank with very high DEF as it's impossible to dodge their attacks. BIG NOTE: DO NOT TAKE A BREAKER. They can't be broken, so use that unit slot to help your survivability or increase your DPS Also, the key elemental damage to worry about are Earth, Water, Wind, and Lightning as he will do some pretty strong attacks using each of the elements. Finally, he alternates between resisting physical damage and resisting magic damage, and also alternates which elements he's susceptible to (fire and lightning together, wind and light together). So just switch back and forth, or use hybrid DPS units for unit slot efficiency.

This is actually where we both agreed that the game needs to do a much better job of clarity. There's no way to tell what elements you're getting hit by in any given fight. Normally, the animation would indicate to you whether it's water or fire or ice or whatever element. That's not the case, and colours don't matter either. For example, in this fight, there's a tornado animation doing lightning damage... why? If there's going to be multiple elements at least help us by giving us accurate animations, or as Wilmgaard suggested, put the elemental indicators beside the attack.

Normally in any RPG there's a way to figure out what element it is, beyond just guessing what resistance to bring until it works. Monster Compendiums are a staple, but FFBE does not give us any way to collect this info within the confines of the game, and any game should be able to give you all the information you need, or give you a way to figure it out within the game itself. We don't need detailed information about every aspect of the fight like the Wiki provides, but at least tell us what the hell we're being hit with!!

Anyways, after beating Orthros on round 1, he's the same in round 2. The trick to round 2 is Typhon, we brings a whole new set of abilities, damage, and annoyance. The main thing he does that can really wreck you is Snort. He has a temporary snort, and then he permanently snorts a unit after a specific threshold. We avoid this by Nuking him down ASAP in the fight. Then it boils back down to Orthros by himself and you've already beaten that in round 1!

We hope this helps you guys clear the fight! Some awesome units include Sieghard, Folka, Sylvie, Elena. You can supplement them with other units as you need, or substitute them with similar but "weaker" units as well (ex. Use Wilhelm instead of Sieghard).
