This episode emphasizes the importance of relationships in the dissemination of the gospel, using the biblical account of Peter and Cornelius to underscore the transformative power of cross-cultural evangelism. It then connects this theme to the historical mission of 1843, when missionaries were dispatched to non-English speaking areas, akin to Peter’s calling to visit Cornelius. Among these missionaries was Addison Pratt, a former whaler who, despite a tumultuous past, had developed a rudimentary understanding of Hawaiian during his travels. After receiving a patriarchal blessing, he and three other missionaries, including Benjamin F. Grouard and Noah Rogers, set sail to preach in Hawaii. Their arduous six-month voyage took them past Australia and eventually to an island south of Tahiti, where they encountered both hospitable reception and challenges, such as the death of one missionary from tuberculosis.

Upon reaching Tubuai, the missionaries experienced a warm welcome, leading one to remain there while Addison and the others planned to travel to Tahiti, unaware of the war transpiring there. Instead, they redirected to the Tuamutu Islands. The significance of building strong relationships is highlighted through Addison’s interactions with the Tupoy locals and his missionary endeavors that bridged cultural gaps through language. The text concludes by noting the upcoming 180th-anniversary celebration of Addison Pratt’s arrival on Tubuai, an event that church leaders will attend to honor the legacy of early missionary work and the enduring power of relationships in spreading faith.

Want know more about the music on this podcast? We are blessed to have M. Diego Gonzalez as a regular contributor of songs he has arranged, performed, and recorded especially for this podcast. My wife and I became acquainted with Diego when he was serving a as missionary in the Puerto Rico San Juan Mission. We were so impressed with his talent, we asked if he would compose and perform songs for Filled With His Love. He thankfully agreed. Hope you enjoy his work!
