It's tough being a kid these days. Who wants to grow up during a global pandemic? But before COVID-19 stole 2020, there was another growing, generational issue in the U.S.: the opioid epidemic. It's people like Dr. Suzanne Spencer who strive to protect children from encountering substance abuse. She's the CEO of the Living Skills in the Schools (LSIS) non-profit organization. Dr. Spencer and her team aim to reduce and prevent substance abuse by teaching kids from kindergarten to 12th grade the skills and perspective they need to resist peer pressure and addiction. In today's episode, Dr. Spencer tells Gerard how she got involved with LSIS, how the program adapted to virtual school, and how she created an incredibly innovative approach to engaging students and their families--the Family Box.
