The Bible says several times that we are to FEAR God. But I think that the translation of this world has been lost over the centuries of evolution to the English language. Let me try to break it down for everyone a little bit here. The “fear” the Bible is referring to is not like the fear you have watching a scary movie or when you hear a rustling in the dark woods. The translated English word “Fear” is from the Hebrew “Yirah” (Yir-ah’) which is defined as awesome, extreme reverence. So when the Bible tells us in Proverbs 1:7 “The FEAR of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Or in Matthew 10:28 where the Lord tells us “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather FEAR him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell,” the Bible is not telling us to be scared, but rather to stand in awe of the greatness and power of almighty God. The most spiritual and God-fearing humans among us, no matter how hard they try, cannot begin to even imagine the power and glory of God. That’s how great our God is. And that’s how great Heaven will be to those who choose to believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of the Earth. It’s impossible for us to comprehend it, but if you accept Jesus you’re saved, one day you’ll know first-had why we FEAR God.
