In today's case study show with Orange County Choppers we talked with Jim Kerr about their second live Q&A with Paul Sr, Mikey and Nick. They definitely improved from the previous week, and we discussed what they should be keeping in mind as they go live each time. Miss the previous case study episodes? Episode 1: Goals & Plans Episode 2: Too much Planning, Not Enough Live Streaming Episode 3: First Live Stream! Episode 4: How to Fix an Awkward Live Stream Better Introductions, with Room to Improve In last week's case study, we talked about how to manage those awkward moments that are sometimes unavoidable in live streaming. Jim and the team took the tips from last week and delivered an improved second show. We'd still like to see a more developed set of introductions, maybe with some details about the business itself for any viewers who may not know the story. Rolling with the Unexpected There was a funny bit at the beginning involving eating on camera. They took what could have been a problem, and turned it into a very engaging scene with the guys. It was totally natural and showcased the personalities their audience loves. Last Minute Changes The team changed the plan for the stream just before they went live. Originally it was to be a tour of their shop, but at the last moment they decided to do a Q&A session. The guys on camera rolled with the new plan and it wasn't a problem. Editing Social Messages After the Stream There are a lot of things you can pack into a post on Facebook, and typing it all on your phone just before you go live isn't a very realistic plan. We recommend a short simple description from your phone during the stream, then replacing it with more detailed, link-heavy text that can be done from a computer after the stream is over. They did that very well, but we also pointed out the importance of avoiding wording that sounds too much like a sales pitch. A Succesful Promotion In their second stream, the guys promoted T-shirt sales and they saw great reactions to their call to action. They're tracking the shirt promotion with a unique coupon code, and it's showing them how powerful live video can be. Gear Improvements for Close-Ups They realize that close-ups of some things are important, so they'll be adding a longer cable to their rig to make that possible. Plans for the Next Show Orange County Choppers has now done two live Q&As, they like the response and audience they've drawn on those, but they're thinking it's time for something different next week. We talked about possible topics that could let them stay with the Q&A concept, while leading it in a new direction for new questions. It was great second stream with some very funny and genuine moments. And it's awesome to see the live video helping with the T-shirt promotion! What are your live streaming questions? Did the issues we discussed with Jim make you think of things you've encountered with live video? Let us know in the comments!
