New Website for Family Tree Magazine

Family Tree Magazine has a new website. It’s more streamlined and combines the magazine, Family Tree University, and Family Tree Shop into one website. You’ll also find the blogs and the Family Tree Magazine Podcast.

The new website should make it easier to find what you’re looking for and easier to access. You can find everything at familytreemagazine.com. The URLs for the university and the shop will automatically forward you the correct place at the new website.

When you search you’ll get results for articles, products, and courses.

You can register at the site for free. This gets you the weekly email newsletter, access to the free content, and limited viewing of Premium articles.

Find Newspapers at The Ancestor Hunt

There’s lots of newspaper news. You can keep up with newspaper news with Kenneth Marks and his blog The Ancestor Hunt. This is where all this newspaper news I’m about to mention was found. And at his website you can find links to all sorts of websites for digitized newspapers. I’ll have a link in the show notes to his site.

More Florida and Puerto Rico Newspapers to be Digitized

The University of Florida has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to make pages available for historic newspapers from Florida and Puerto Rico. When the project is completed they will be found online for free. There will be access to more than 300,000 pages dating from 1690 to 1963.

The digitized papers will be available through the Library of Congress Chronicling America as well as the library websites for the University of Florida and the University of Puerto Rico.

More Connecticut Newspapers to be Digititized

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) provides grants for the digitization of newspapers that are placed online at the Library of Congress Chronicling America website.

They have awarded a supplemental grant to the Connecticut State Library to continue to digitize Connecticut newspapers over the next two years. The Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project advisory board will select the newspapers to be scanned.

More West Virginia Newspapers to be Digitized

NEH has also awarded more money for newspapers to be digitized in West Virginia. This is the West Virginia University libraries fourth NEH grant. The grant will allow more than 100,000 pages to be digitized.

They will focus on the opening of the coalfields in West Virginia and the influx of African-Americans who migrated to West Virginia for jobs as well as the expansion of the railroad and the development of the city of Huntington.

Delaware Newspapers to be Digitized

The University of Delaware library has received another grant from NEH to continue its efforts digitizing historic newspapers.

They have selected two titles to digitize. They are the Every Evening (1871-1922) and Evening Journal (1888-1922). They will be digitizing up 200,000 pages from September 1 through August 31, 2019.

North Dakota Newspapers to be Digitized

NEH has awarded a fourth grant to the Archives Division of the State Historical Society of North Dakota to continue digitizing newspapers. This will be used to digitize another 100,000 pages.

Digitization Project at the Derry Public Library in New Hampshire

The Derry Public Library in New Hampshire is undertaking a digitization process to make available newspapers, scrapbooks, town records, and historical survey records. The newspaper is the Derry News and it dates back to 1891.

Wisconsin Newspaper the Jefferson County Union Available Online

The Wisconsin newspaper the Jefferson County Union is now available online. The years from 1892 through 1918 can be found at the Archive of Wisconsin Newspapers repository.

The years from 1890 to 1892 will be available soon.

The collections are only available for free to Wisconsin residents.

Some Duvall Washington Newspapers Available Online

Some newspapers from Duvall, Washington, are available online. All of the Duvall Citizen is available. That would be from October, 1911 – December, 1916. The Carnavall Reporter is available from June, 1953 – November, 1964.

The newspapers are searchable and browsable.

More Iowa Newspapers to be Digitized

The Griswold Public Library in Iowa has received a grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa to digitize local newspapers. The following newspapers will be digitized:

• the Griswold American weekly from February 1880 to December 2015

• Lewis Independent from June 1881 to April 1882

• Lewis Standard from July 1899 to January 1933

• Elliott Graphic from 1893 to 1942

Iowa Newspaper The Mapleton Press to be Digitized

The State Historical Society of Iowa has also given a grant to the Fisher-Whiting Memorial Library in Mapleton to microfilm and digitize The Mapleton Press newspapers from July 2011 through June 2016. Earlier years of the newspaper are already available online.

Missouri Baptist Newspaper to be Digitized

A Missouri newspaper dedicated to Baptists news and inspirational living has received a grant to digitize past issues. Every issue of Word&Way from its launch in July 1896 through 1980 will be digitized.

Also The Central Baptists newspaper will be digitized. This was a newspaper in Missouri that ran from 1866 until the Word&Way bought in 1912.

It is estimated that the digitization will be completed by June 2018.

Index to Maui News Coming Online

The Maui Historical Society, in partnership with the University of Hawaii Maui College Library, will be making an index to the Maui News available on the internet sometime in the near future.

The index was created by a copy editor at Maui Community College. It is an index for the years 1900 to 1973.

Haitian Newspapers to be Digitized

A grant has been given to digitize ninety-one Haitian newspapers that were published between 1813 and 1913. The digitized newspapers will eventually be available online at the British Library and the Digital Library of the Caribbean.

FamilySearch Online Indexing Available

The FamilySearch online indexing tool is now available. You can index from FamilySearch.org. You no longer need to download a program.

Ancestry Adds Sydney, Australia, Anglican Parish Records

Ancestry has added a new collection for Sydney, Australia, Anglican Parish Registers, 1818 – 2011. These records are from the Anglican Church Diocese of Sydney.

Ancestry Adds Bedfordshire Records

Ancestry has added some records for Bedfordshire, England. There are land records that cover the years from 1797 to 1832. You can find the year of residence, the name of the occupier, the name of the owner, and the parish.

The Petty Sessions records that have been added for Bedfordshire cover the years from 1854 to 1915. Petty sessions involve things like drunkenness or minor theft. These types of offenses did not need a jury.

The valuation records that have been added cover the years from 1838 to 1929. These records deal with the value of properties. They name the proprietor or tenant, describe or name the property and give an annual rental value.

MyHeritage DNA Match Review Page

MyHeritage has released a new feature called the DNA Match Review page. The page has more detailed information about each of your DNA matches.

There are different sections to help you discover how your matches are related to you. For any match click the Review match button. The DNA Match Review page is displayed. It combines information from DNA and family trees.

For all matches you will see shared ethnicities. It will be displayed as a percentage and the location is displayed on a map. This can help you determine which ancestor you and your match have in common based on what countries you share DNA from. Of course it is possible that you and your match got the matching ethnicity from different ancestors that you do not have in common.

The amount of information you see on the DNA Match Review page will depend on how much information the match has posted at MyHeritage.

If the match has uploaded a pedigree chart, you will see it. There is another tab you can click to look at your own pedigree chart to try to find a common ancestor.

MyHeritage plans are to add a Chromosome Browser that many have requested.

New Records at Findmypast

Now for some new editions to Findmypast.

Findmypast has updated their Billion Graves Cemetery Indexes from around the world.

They have added thousands of additions to their Middlesex Monumental Inscriptions from All Saints, Fulham.

Over 6,000 records have been added to the North West Kent burials collection. These records come from Sidcup Cemetery in Bexley.

They have added Buckinghamshire baptisms, banns, marriages, and burials. And you can browse the London, Bunhill Fields Non-Conformist Burials 1713-1826.

More records have been added to the National Burial Index for England & Wales.

A few more records were added to the Wiltshire parish baptisms index.

There are over 16,000 records for Middlesex Protestation Returns 1641 – 42 that you can search.

7 new titles have been added to the British Newspapers. Those include

• Tenby Observer

• Brechin Herald

• Milngavie and Bearsden Herald

• Alcester Chronicle

• Abergavenny Chronicle

• Ripley and Heanor News and Ilkeston Division Free Press

• Eastern Daily Press and the Colchester Gazette

More articles have been added to the Irish Newspaper collection and one new title has been added – the Leitrim Advertiser.

Ireland Calendars of Wills & Administrations 1858 – 1920 have been added. The calendar typically contains a summary of the will and probate. It may include the name of the deceased, their address, occupation, beneficiaries, date of death and value of the estate. The collection covers all of Ireland except for the year 1918. For that year it covers only 26 counties. This is only an index. The images are freely available at the National Archives of Ireland website which also has an index to the images.

More PDF images have been added to Scotland Registers & Records. These are from different publications related to Scottish parishes and families.

Findmypast now has the Canada Census for 1851.

Over 1.7 million muster rolls records have been added from the United States Marine Corps. These rolls are from the 1700s to the end of the nineteenth century.

Some new things added from the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society include more images of the quarterly review, New York Researcher, and more images have been added for the New York and Biographical Record.

The St. Paul Public Library in Minnesota has digitized city directories for the years 1856 to 1922. The information in the city directory is obtained by people going door-to-door to find out who lived where and what they did for living.

There’s also information about government agencies, churches, schools, railroads as well as all sorts of organizations.

Over 500 Old Pictures of New York City are Available

Lots of photos from Greenwich Village in New York City are now available online. The photos help preserve the architectural heritage and culture of the area.

The photos were taken from the early 1960s to the early 1990s. The photos were taken by Carole Teller, an artist who lived in the East Village.

Lots of Resource for Montana can be found at DPLA

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) has a new surface hub for Montana. The new hub is a collaborative effort between the Montana State Library, the Montana historical Society, the University of Montana, and the Montana State University.

These organizations have made thousands of new resources available on DPLA. This new service hub is called the Big Sky Country Digital Network. There are manuscripts and photos as well as correspondence from those who came to the region in the 1860s. There is also collection of maps.

DigitalNC is the online library for institutions across North Carolina. Here are the recent additions to the website.

LAC Monthly Report on the Canadian Expeditionary Force Personnel Service Files

The Library and Archives Canada has released their monthly report about the digitization of the Canadian Expeditionary Force Personnel Service Files. They are now up to the name Rasmess – R A S M E S S.

These service files are for soldiers of the First World War. They are digitizing the files basically in alphabetical order.

They are now 74% complete and they are still on schedule to have the whole project completed by November 2018.

Additions to TheGenealogist

TheGenealogist, a subscription website in the UK, has added more baptisms, marriages, and burials for Nottinghamshire. This is a parish in the East Midland county of England.

They’ve also added to the Court & Criminal Records collection. The new records are those convicts who were waiting to be sent to Australia and the criminal registers from England and Wales.

New Entries to Chief Secretary of Ireland’s Office Registered Papers (CSORP)

The Chief Secretary of Ireland’s Office Registered Papers has added more entries to its online catalog. These papers relate to the administration of Ireland and may include letters and petitions from individuals or organizations on various topics.

Some topics are about Ireland in general but others may be about incarceration, smuggling, religious intolerance, neighbor disputes, employment and health.

The new entries are for the years 1823 – 1830. The years from 1818 – 1822 have been available for the past few years online. The online catalog with these entries is an index. The actual records are available at the Reading Room of the National Archives in Dublin.

New Australian Historical Magazine

A new magazine about Australian history will be launching in December. The name of the magazine will be Traces.

The magazine will contain content about history, genealogy, historic events and people. It will feature the latest historical research and news.

The magazine will be issued quarterly.

ArkivDigital Launches New Name Searchable Register for Estate Inventories

ArkivDigital is a subscription site for Swedish records. They have launched a new name searchable register for estate inventories. This is not complete and currently includes seven counties.

The estate inventories contain details about the assets and liabilities of the deceased person’s estate.

In order to access this new register you will need to have an All-in-one subscription.

ArkivDigital Adds Portraits

ArkivDigital has added about 250,000 portrait photographs from three Stockholm photography studios. These photographs were taken from 1920 up to the 1970s.

Most of the people who had their photograph taken by these studios lived in Stockholm.

There is a name searchable register to the portraits and you need to have an All-in-on subscription to ArkivDigital to access the photographs.

Make Hotel Reservations for NGS 2018 Conference

It’s time to make your hotel reservations for the National Genealogical Society’s 2018 Family History Conference. The conference will be held May 2 – 5 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The conference will focus on the Great Lakes region. There will be an emphasis on the migration paths of those moving west and immigrants coming from overseas through Canada to develop the Midwest.

Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy Dates and Two-Week Sessions

The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) has signed contracts with the Hilton Salt Lake City Center for the next five years. And they will be offering two-week sessions. This new format will start in 2019.

The first week will be held in a familiar format for SLIG where the focus will be on high-intermediate to advanced genealogical education. Those wishing to stay on for the second week will focus on profession development.

Maureen Taylor, the photo detective, has a podcast called Ask Maureen. You may have seen some of these Ask Maureen sessions on Facebook in a video format. She has taken those and created a podcast for them.

TLC WDYTYA? Spring 2018

TLC has renewed Who Do You Think You Are? for a new season. The series follows celebrities as they learn about their ancestors. The new season will air in spring 2018.

The series is currently nominated for an Emmy Award for Structured Reality Program. This is its 3rd nomination in this category and 4th overall. Last year Who Do You Think You Are? won an Emmy for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Reality Program.

FamilySearch United States and Canada Research Seminar

FamilySearch will be holding a United States and Canada Research Seminar starting the week of October 16. They have done these types of conferences before where people can attend the live sessions in Salt Lake City or you watch the live sessions on your computer from home.

Each day will have sessions related to the United States and Canada. Topics include census, vital records, naturalization records, probate, and the military. There will be sessions devoted to DNA, Ontario, and the Freedman Bureau records.

And don’t forget about the Nordic Family History Conference from FamilySearch that will be the week of September 11th. It will be similar the United States and Canada Research Seminar where you can watch sessions from home.
