Ancestry Adds London Directories

Ancestry has added almost 20 million records for London, England, directories that were published from 1736 to 1943. Many of the directories are from the greater London area of Middlesex.

There are different types of directories in this collection. There are street, commercial, trade, court, and post office directories. Many of the directories are named after their publishers such as Pigot and Kelly. Pigot was eventually forced out of business by Kelly.

The indexes for these directories were created for every fifth year.

Ancestry Adds Liverpool & Edinburgh Electoral Registers

Ancestry has added electoral registers for Liverpool and Edinburgh. The Liverpool, England, collection has many Irish names in it. It spans the years from 1832 to 1970.

The Edinburgh, Scotland, registers span the years from 1832 to 1966. There are nearly 5 million names for people who lived in Edinburgh and were eligible to vote.

The indexes to the electoral registers are for every fifth year. There were no registers created during World War I and World War II so those years are missing.

Fold3 Adds Texas and California to WWII Draft Registration Cards

Fold3 has added two more states to its World War II Registration Cards collection. The collection now includes Texas and California. These cards are registration for the draft and if you find someone in the collection it does not mean that they served in the military.

The cards contain the man’s name, address, telephone number, age, place of birth, country of citizenship, name and address of the person who will always know the registrant’s address, employer’s name, place of employment, and a description of the registrant.

Findmypast UK Census Records Searchable by Address

Findmypast has added the capability to search by address for the British censuses from 1841 to 1911. This tool allows you to find out who was living at a particular address at the time each census was taken.

Searching by address has been available at Findmypast for the 1901 and 1911 UK censuses, the 1939 Register and Australia Electoral Rolls.

Findmypast has added thousands of records for Yorkshire parish records. That would be for baptisms, banns, marriages, and burials. More parish records have also been added for Derbyshire.

They have combined collections for marriages around London into the Greater London Marriage Index collection. It includes results from the Middlesex Marriage Index, the West Middlesex Marriage Index, the St Andrew’s Holborn Marriage Index and Docklands and East End Marriages.

New records have been added to the Greater London Marriage Index collection from the Royal College of Arms covering historic chapels at St James Duke’s Place, Gray’s Inn, Somerset House and the Austin Friars Dutch Reform Church.

More records have been added for Catholic burials in Worksop to the Nottinghamshire Burial Index.

Findmypast has added Norfolk, Electoral Registers, as a browsable collection. This collection came from FamilySearch.

Over 21,000 records have been added to the collection for Aberdeenshire, Banffshire & Kincardineshire Monumental Inscriptions.

For the United States, Findmypast has added transcriptions of headstone inscriptions from the Town of Sharon in Connecticut.

NYG&B Tool to Display Search Results for The Record on a Map

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) has launched a new tool that allows you to search The Record, a publication from NYG&B about New York families and records. Your search will bring up results for New York and they will be displayed on a map.

This tool is currently in beta and covers articles that were published from 1970 to 2018. The Record has been published since 1870.

Digital Library of Georgia Places Online Material Related to the Civil War

The Digital Library of Georgia has placed online the Henry L. Benning Civil War materials. These materials are the result of the Digital Library of Georgia’s grant program for digitization projects.

The Henry L. Benning collection belongs to Columbus State University Archives. Benning rose to the rank of brigadier general under Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. His materials consist of his service during the war, orders sent to him and reports of engagements.

Library of Congress New Collection About Black Civil War Troops

The Library of Congress has launched the William A. Gladstone Afro-American Military Collection. Gladstone was a historian and author of books about black Civil War troops.

The collection documents African-Americans in military service. There are also many documents concerning slavery and other Civil War documents that mention African-Americans.

Phillips County, Arkansas, Death Certificate Index

A history class at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has created an index of Phillips County death certificates. The index covers the years from 1917 to 1922. The records were found at the Keeshan-Lambert Funeral Home.

These records may be the only record of death certificates for African Americans in the county during this time since the newspaper in the area at that time did not print obituaries for African Americans.

Once the project was completed it was given to the Arkansas History Commission so it can be made available for public use. It’s in a digital format. It will be helpful for researchers and genealogists.

African Americans WWI Soldiers Buried in Atlanta Cemetery

There is a new online portal dedicated to African American World War I soldiers who are buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.

This new portal is a prototype and it contains information about 10 African American World War I veterans buried at the historic cemetery. The information focuses on the veteran’s lives and the history of the area.

The nonprofit Historic Oakland Foundation has partnered with the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship to create a prototype for an interactive online exhibition. It is hoped that the portal can be used as a template for future projects.

Grants Available to Digitize North Carolina Collections

Grants are available to help with the transport, scanning, and online publishing of North Carolina historical records and archival materials. The grants can only be given to North Carolina institutions that hold archival records about North Carolina and whose facilities are open to the public.

Libraries, archives, historical and genealogical societies, museums, and other institutional and organizational archives are eligible. You have until March 16th to apply and I’ll have a link in the show notes where you can find out more information.

New Additions to DigitalNC

DigitalNC is the online library for institutions across North Carolina. They have added a few things recently.

There are some new issues of the newspapers The Perquimans Weekly. This paper was published out of Hertford, North Carolina. The new issues increase the collection to span the years from 1834 to 1989.

Seventeen more years have been added from The Franklin Press and Highlands Maconian. This collection has nearly doubled with the addition of issues from 1943 – 1960. This newspaper was based out of Franklin in Macon County, North Carolina.

And five new scrapbooks from High Point that contain newspaper clippings have been added to DigitalNC.

More South Dakota Newspapers Online

More newspapers from South Dakota have been placed online at the Chronicling America website. New titles added include the Sully County Watchman out of Clifton, 1883-1894; the State-Line Herald from North Lemmon in Adams County, North Dakota, 1908-1912; and the Lemmon Herald from Lemmon, South Dakota, 1912-1917.

The State-Line Herald started in North Dakota and moved across the border to South Dakota in 1910.

Also more issue of the Deutscher (DOYT-cher) Herold of Sioux Falls have been added.

Newspapers Added to the Portal of Texas History

More newspapers are being digitized and placed online at the Portal to Texas History. A grant was given to digitize the Cleveland Advocate’s print archives. The archives include the Cleveland Advocate’s sister publications – Dayton News and Eastex Advocate, and two other defunct newspapers – Illustrated Paperboy and Cleveland Journal.

The newspapers have been digitized and they are starting to become available online.

LAC Monthly Report on the Canadian Expeditionary Force Personnel Service Files

The Library and Archives Canada continues digitizing the Canadian Expeditionary Force Personnel Service Files. They are now up to the name Swindells – S W I N D E L L S.

These service files are for soldiers of the First World War. They are digitizing the files basically in alphabetical order.

They are now 87% complete. They want to be completed by November 2018 which is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. At the current rate of digitization they will have this collection completed by September 2018. Two months ahead of schedule.

Drouin Institute Adds Marriages for 1917

The Drouin Institute has added all 1917 Quebec Catholic marriages to its subscription site Genealogy Quebec. The are available as part of the LAFRANCE database.

This makes about 900,000 Quebec Catholic marriages available at the website. There are links to images of the original church records.

TheGenealogists Adds Color Tithe Maps for Buckinghamshire

TheGenealogists, a subscription website in the UK, has added color tithe maps for Buckinghamshire. These maps show the plots that were owned or occupied by people that lived there at the time of the survey in the 19th century. The years from 1837 to 1855 are covered.

You can search the maps by name, parish or county.

Eddie’s Extracts Has Its Own Website

As a result of RootsWeb being unavailable the Northern Irish website Eddie’s Extracts has moved the material to its own website at eddiesextracts.com.

At the website you will find indexes and abridgments of newspaper articles, records of deceased seamen, military rolls of honor, parish records, and lots more.

IGRS How-To Videos

Members of the Irish Genealogical Research Society have access to some new how-to videos. These videos offer first hand expertise and guidance about topics related to Irish genealogy.

The first three videos are about census records, Roman Catholic church records, and Church of Ireland parish registers. A fourth video about Civil Registration will be coming soon.

As a new resource for members, the IGRS has commissioned a series of “how-to” educational videos designed to help both the newcomer and not-so-new with their research.

Third Season of Relative Race Begins on March 4

The third season of Relative Race returns on BYUtv on March 4th. Four teams compete for a grand prize of $50,000. They race across the country finding DNA relatives and completing challenges.

During the race each couple spends the night at their new relatives home. This season there are two married couples, a team of two sisters, and a team with a father and son.

This year the teams will start in Washington, D. C. It has not been released where the teams will wind up in the end.
