General information about the ZKM

The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics conceives of itself as a forum for international exchange. It organizes and initiates concerts of contemporary music, symposia and festivals, and carries out research projects in cooperation with guest artists and scientists developing acoustic productions. The projects embrace digital sound syntheses, algorithmic compositions, live electronics, radio plays, interactive sound installations and audiovisual productions. The aesthetic spectrum of works already realized is not restricted to the paradigm »new music« in the 20th century sense. While most of the works do take their cue from new music, the institute nevertheless provides a platform for all musical approaches pursuing new tendencies and technologies with open ears. Das ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik versteht sich als Forum des internationalen Austausches. Es veranstaltet und initiiert zeitgenössische Konzerte, Symposien sowie Festivals und forscht in Kooperation mit Gastkünstlern und Wissenschaftlern, die akustische Produktionen erarbeiten. Die Projekte umfassen digitale Klangsynthese, algorithmische Komposition, Live-Elektronik, Hörspiel, interaktive Klanginstallation und audiovisuelle Produktionen. Die ästhetische Bandbreite der realisierten Arbeiten ist nicht auf ein Paradigma von »Neuer Musik« im Sinne des 20. Jahrhunderts beschränkt. Zwar liegen die Wurzeln der meisten Arbeiten dort, dennoch bietet das Institut eine Basis für alle musikalischen Ansätze, die mit offenen Ohren neue Tendenzen und Technologien in der Musik verfolgen.
