Generation Justice deeply mourns the loss of Matthew Finch, the Music Director of KUNM. Mateo, as we called him, was a fundamental anchor of support for us at Generation Justice and before that-- The KUNM Youth Radio Project. In the span of 19 years, Mateo was always a step and phone call away to offer us support. He trained so so many youths on how to use the massive music library. He loved providing training on music history, genres, and artists. He often gave us music and advice on how to blend our sounds and bed music for our productions. He was so committed to artists who needed KUNM airwaves as a vehicle to share their talent and that commitment as we know focused on New Mexican talent. Mateo, just last week, I let you know we were again going to be calling on you to train youth at KUNM--- Your last words to me were--- “I’m looking forward to it.” Roberta Rael “Matthew, your physical loss is a very difficult thing for all of us who had the privilege of knowing you. The KUNM music library will feel very empty without you. Gracias por la pasión tan grande que tenías por la música y por destacar la música local Nuevo Mexicana. Gracias por los Cds que nos compartiste, la ayuda que nos diste, y por ser la persona que eras. Humildemente continuaremos tu legado de respeto y amor por la música. I had the privilege of interviewing Matthew in November of 2022 for a video class. We’d like to share this memory with you.” Barbara Ramirez, GJ Associate Producer
