Born and bred in Antigua, he's lived in Hackney since the sixties. A flamboyant, wise-cracking local character, Barrington is a husband, father and grandfather - but he is also secretly lovers with his great childhood friend, Morris. When his marriage goes into meltdown, Barrington wants to divorce Carmel and live with Morris, but after a lifetime of fear and deception, will he manage to break away? Critic Reviews: "Evaristo remains an undeniably bold and energetic writer, whose world view is anything but one-dimensional" ( Sunday Times on Blonde Roots) Members Reviews: It will take you by surprise What made the experience of listening to Mr Loverman the most enjoyable? The book is beautifully written, as one would expect from Ms Evaristo. This is the story of secret love, told in such an engaging style, with such beautifully drawn characters you can't help but be fully engaged in what is such a sad tale. It had me laughing out loud in places, and near to tears in others. The book is a joy. Any additional comments? The performance of James Goode was stellar. He brought authenticity to the characters, and read so beautifully I want to hear more from him. He was the perfect choice to read such a wonderful novel. WEST INDIAN AS RICE AND PEAS Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? This book was recommended to me and I would definitely recommend it to others. It is a great story about two elderly Caribbean males. A demographic we rarely hear from or read about. What other book might you compare Mr Loverman to, and why? Of the books I have read and listened to, including those written by Caribbean writers, I can think of none that compare. What does James Goode bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book? James Goode's narration was excellent. Narration makes or breaks an audio book. These accents sounded authentic. Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? This book made me laugh and cry. This is a story of bittersweet relationships. Between the central characters and lovers Barrington and Morris and Barrington and his wife, Carmel. Any additional comments? I enjoyed this book very much but found that the English classical education references (Greek mythology etc) jarred and seemed to be more about the author than the character. Brillant What did you like most about Mr Loverman? I loved this audiobook and a big part of it was the narration. He brought the characters alive and I was engrossed.
