Melissa is ready to escape her job - and mismanaged love life - at Les Trois Alpes. On the West Indian island of Nevis, she finds new opportunities to cook things up at a high-end restaurant - and with a new crush. Harley has been a beach bum since she arrived - she cant hold a job and recklessly flirts with the one person who could ruin her friendship with Lily. And speaking of Lily...she has finally been reunited with the guy of her dreams. But now that theyre together, is he really all she wanted? With the lure of the sand, surf, and steamy romances, will the girls ever want to go back to the slopes? Members Reviews: I tend to like novels more than short stories I tend to like novels more than short stories, so I was a little hesitant to buy this book as it's described elsewhere as a novel in stories. I shouldn't have hesitated - the novel works beautifully. We follow a number of characters, whose intersecting stories give a fuller picture of the invasion than following only one perspective would. Amidst tragedy, characters of all backgrounds work together to solve and to save, just like in the real world. I liked how human and alien perspectives alternate, and how much Mohanraj was able to pack into a relatively short book. Her imagining of different families, relationships and backgrounds is also interesting. I will definitely keep Mary Anne Mohanraj on my list of authors to follow! Short and a bit too hemmed in The culture was interesting, but not deeply investigated, the inter-species sex didn't ring true, and it felt a bit like a propaganda pamphlet. The writing was good, but I felt that something was missing- some way to truly involve with the characters. Should-read. This was an entertaining short read. A number of intersecting stories which gave a background for a rich universe of wildly different species and relationships lead up to a climactic finale. Well-written and well-thought-out, with enough spice to make it interesting. A good look at different relationships, families, upbringings, Mohanraj has deftly inserted enough of each different culture to show the difference and highlight the alien without losing the essential nature of all the characters. There is a strong parent/child theme which runs through the book as well. I enjoyed it immensely. Odd but worthwhile This book is strangely flat but Mohanraj's vision of an incredibly diverse future keeps it going, and made me forgive everything. The shifting viewpoints among human and alien characters actually work to make is a refreshingly non-human-centered bit of science fiction - we're just part of the cast, with alien norms treated respectfully on an equal basis with human ones. The central conflict is between isolation and participation in a universe of wildly variable kinds of species, and the book's good intentions carry the day for an interesting read. Funny, touching and surprisingly complex This universe builder is rife with love, humor, and cultural anthropology, which brings unexpected depths to a space fantasy romance. I very enjoyed the characters, fast pace, and story, and would love to read the sequel :-) Hint Hint! Contact me for any questions: inforeq17@gmail.com
