Swamy Vedanta Desikan is one of the greatest Vaishnavite scholars and thinkers of India. He belonged to the 13th century. He had written a number of philosophical as well as religious and poetical works in several languages.

Raghuveera Gadyam is one of his important works. Gadyam means prose. Normally most of the hymns are in poetic forms. But this hymn is in prose form. And this hymn portrays the heroic form of Lord Rama, the descendant of the Raghu dynasty. Hence it is known as Raghuveera Gadyam.

Leaving out the single sloka at the beginning and the two slokas at the end, this work consists of 94 addresses to Lord Rama in prose form, some small and some big. The entire epic of Valmiki Ramayana has been epitomised in these 94 sentences called as choornikas. The outstanding traits of Rama are all touched upon. Every address makes mention of at least one characteristic trait of that Repository of all auspicious qualities.
