The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath
  • Jesus was going through the grainfields and his disciples began to eat some of the kernels from the grain

  • God had commanded the Sabbath to be a time of rest and no work no labor

  • The Pharisees asked them why they were doing something unlawful on the Sabbath

  • Jesus answered them with Word about David and his companions eating the consecrated bread which was unlawful b/c it was only for the priest

  • He then tells them The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath ( he wass affirming his deity he was the Lord who created the Sabbaath and had the authority to make exceptioon

  • On another Sabbath, he was teaching in the synagogue and a man whose right hand was shriveled

  • The Pharisees were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath

  • Jesus knew what they were thinking

Get Up and Stand in Front of Everyone

  • Jesus tells the man with the shriveled hand to Get Up and stand in front of everyone

  • So he gets up and stands there

  • Jesus asked them two questions

  • Which is lawful on the Sabbath: To do good or to do evil

  • To save life or to destroy it?

  • They were more concerned about the law than freedom for the man

Stretch out your hand

  • He looks at all of them and then at the man he stretch out your hand

  • The man did

  • He was completely restored

  • They were furious and began to discuss what to do about Jesus

Calling the Disciples

  • This is the third portion of Scripture that we have read that reminds us to pray

  • Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray

  • He spent the night praying to God

  • After spending time with God, he called his disciples and chose 12 designated disciples

  • Disciples means learner or follower

  • Apostles means sent one

  • Simon peter

  • Andrew

  • James

  • John

  • Philip

  • Bartholomew

  • Matthew

  • Thomas

  • James

  • Simon

  • Judas (Jude)

  • Judas- the traitor

What can we learn?

  • Jesus Lord over All

  • He is not a secret healer. His healings were visual and on display so that the credit would go to God

  • Obedience brings restoration

  • Our important decision must be bathed in prayer

  • God calls ordinary people these men had different personalities and lifestyles
