- Acts 20:7-11 ESV

7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. 9 And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10 But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” 11 And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed. 12 And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted.

AN EXTENDED TALK

It was Lord’s day. Luke accounted that they were gathered together in unnamed 3 storey building at Troas. It should be noted that the early Christians met on Sundays. Why? First, because it is the day of the week that Jesus rose from the dead (Matt 28:1). Second, because it represented the first day of creation—the church is something new, and the Jesus-followers have work to do.

"Breaking of bread" may refer to a community meal (a "love feast"), a meal provided for the poor, or the Lord's supper. As it was a first day of the week, this was probably communion. In the early church, communion was practiced every Sunday. The bread and cup are one part of the entire service which also included a reminder of the gospel and a call to repent of sins and reconcile with other church members.

Paul talked with them. It meant that Paul has a discussion with them, reasoning back and forth, instead of just lecturing. Intending to depart on the next day, he prolonged his talked until midnight. Perhaps, there were a lot of subjects and questions covered. Are we willing to spend an extended time to hear the word of God.

A young man named Eutychus who was sitting by the window, while listening. Usually, in the highest room, there was only the roof. Although people do use the roof for living space, fewer supports are needed, allowing upper rooms to be more open. These bigger windows on the higher floor will, normally, also allow for more air flow.

Eutychus had fallen asleep and fell dead to the ground. He died trying to listen the word of God. His tiredness had caught him. However, Paul will bring him back to life and the group will continue talking until daybreak (see v.9–12). The crisis even was transformed into a wonderful testimony. Consequently, they were much encouraged.
