God’s Word for Today

15 May 2024

21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

-Mark 1:21-28 ESV

THE HOLY ONE OF GOD.

As the Lord Jesus began His travel, His next stop was Capernaum. He went to the synagogue during the Sabbath. Teaching in the synagogue becomes the norm of Jesus’ ministry. And, the people were ‘astonished’ at His teaching as one with authority unlike the scribes.

Why?

Jesus taught with authenticity. His life and works backed up His message. For example, He healed a man with an unclean spirit inside the synagogue. The demon recognized and proclaimed, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” That, the demon expressed Jesus as the Holy One of God is quite fascinating! Indeed, the demons believe and tremble.[Jas 2:19]

Jesus is the holy one of God.

Nobody could argue His authority. The unclean spirits obeyed Him. He is the God incarnate. At the wilderness temptation and here, Jesus has expressed His authority by subjugating the demons. Yet, He did not exercise it to annihilate the demons as yet. He was fixated upon His goal to sacrifice at the cross.

Jesus, the Holy One, has humbled Himself by being born like us. As Paul articulated, “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”[Phil 2:6-8]
