Text: Mark 4:30-34 (ESV)

30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

LARGER THAN ALL

Jesus in this parable is highlighting the spread of God’s kingdom through the gospel. It’s like the growth of a mustard tree through planting its seed. Although the mustard seed is not the smallest in the world, it is the "smallest" in the Jewish proverb. These seeds are about one to two millimeters in diameter or about 1/16 inches.

However small it is, it will grow to become the largest of all the trees. God wants us to realize the power of His gospel message of grace. In contrast to Pharaism with all its legalism, the gospel of grace in Christ will grow and spread to the uttermost part of the world.

But, we should take note that Jesus promises that nothing could prevail the advancement of His kingdom through the church.[Matt 16:18] His kingdom is irresistible but the process of growth needs time.

What does it mean for us today?

We’ll just need to prod on sowing seeds faithfully and patiently. [1 Cor 15:58, Gal 6:7-8, Psa 126:4-5] As Jesus has outlined the scope of His authority, we should believe that the preaching of His gospel would reach unto the end of the world before the end comes at His second coming.[Matt 28:18-20; Acts 1:8]. Think of the glory in heaven when people from all walks of life – from every tribe, tongue, and ethnicity who are singing in an endless exaltation of the Lamb, slain before the foundation of the world.[Rev 5:12]
