Text: Mark 10:46-52 (ESV)

46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?

Bartimaeus was a blind beggar sitting by the roadside in Jericho. His hopeless life has been marked by begging on these streets of Jericho, day in and day out. When he heard that Jesus was passing by, he began shouting, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” The mob ignored, even reprimanded him to keep quiet. But, he shouted even louder.

Bartimaeus was desperate for Jesus’ mercy. Have we realized we need God’s mercy, too. Hence, we should crave it as Bartimaeus did. Though, the enemy will oppose us. Like Bartimaeus we should even cry more and louder. Should we be convinced that Jesus is our only hope, we should not allow anything to pull us away from pursuing Him.

And Jesus heard him. He stopped and invited him to come near. And, Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” Why did Jesus ask such an obvious question? We should not assume but be specific in our request before Jesus. As a beggar, his greatest need is sight. He knew that if he could see, he should not be begging again.

Jesus saw his faith and healed him, saying, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. He became a follower of Jesus. Every healing should draw us closer to Jesus, should it not?
