For a band named after what Europeans call Cool Ranch Doritos, Portland’s Cool American sure can write anthemic songs. Today’s song, “Waking Up,” from a collection that “won’t fit” on this Friday’s new album, Infinite Hiatus, is a perfect example. There’s something moving in the way soft acoustic strumming gives way to a crescendo of power chords at the mere mention of coffee, and in the way singer Nathan Tucker’s voice maintains its just-tired-enough quality throughout the song. This is indeed what waking up feels like.
P.S. Big props to them for fitting in the phrase “putzed around.”
