When people think of diversity programs, gender, sexual orientation and race are the traditional markers. But, diversity of thought is another aspect of organizational collective intelligence that should be managed, Deloitte’s Kelvin Womack told the Excellence in Government podcast.

As Managing Principal of Diversity for Deloitte, Womack has studied the ways organizations can increase their innovation and effectiveness using diversity programs. Womack said that finding different types of thinkers is a key to creating a successful work environment. Womack told host Mark Micheli that different mental skill sets can help an organization greatly.

“Diversity of thought increases the scale of collective insights,” Womack said.

Working on programs around diversity of thought is not to replace traditional diversity programs, however. Programs working on diversity of thought are “an advancement or a building block of something that must continue.”

The music in the podcast is John Pazdan's "The Long Goodbye," used under a Creative Commons attribution license.
