Sermon: Romans 14:5-6

“Safely through another week God has brought us on our way; Let us now a blessing seek, waiting in his courts today; Day of all the week the best, emblem of eternal rest: Day of all the week the best, emblem of eternal rest.” – John Newton (speaking of the Lord’s Day)

Main Point: Study to be fully convinced of your position on the Lords Day, but think the best of those who disagree and entrust all judgment to the Lord.

I. Be fully convinced about the Lord’s Day – 14:5.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed (passive imperative) by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2

II. Be patiently gracious about the Lord’s Day – 14:6.

III. So, is there a sacred day, the Lord’s Day?

“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.” – Hebrews 4:9-11

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.” – Revelation 1:10

“During the Sabbath He continued under the earth in the tomb in which Joseph of Arimathæa had laid Him. At the dawning of the Lord’s day He arose from the dead… The … Sabbath embraces the burial; the Lord’s Day contains the resurrection.” – Ignatius of Antioch

Application

1) Study diligently to be convinced in your own mind.

2) Treat others who disagree with grace.

3) Do not break fellowship over differences here.

4) Wherever you come out on the Lord’s Day, His worship is to be primary on the 1st day of the week!

“O what a blessing is Sunday, interposed between the waves of worldly business like the divine path of the Israelites through the sea.” – Samuel Wilberforce (son of William Wilberforce)
