BIBLE STUDY| MIRACLES OF JESUS SERIES.|THE FOURTH MIRACLE OF JESUS pt.12 | THE FEEDING OF 5,000 MEN WITH 5 LOAVES OF BREAD AND 2 FISHES| CHIMDI OHAHUNA. Mark 6:31-34. In our ongoing exploration of the fourth miracle of Jesus, the feeding of the 5,000 as described in John chapter 6, we considered extensively the perplexing mentality of Philip. This mindset, prevalent among many Christians today, can severely limit our faith and hinder God's work. As Jesus witnessed a vast crowd approaching, he turned to Philip and posed a question: 'Where shall we buy bread that these may eat?' (John 6:5). This query served as a test of Philip's faith, an opportunity for him to demonstrate his belief that the miracle was possible. However, Philip's response portrayed a negative attitude: 'Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little' (John 6:7). He focused on the problem rather than the solution, emphasizing the impossibility of feeding such a multitude with limited resources. Jesus' question was not intended to elicit a calculation of expenses but to gauge Philip's faith. Faith is not about blindly believing in something impossible; it is about taking a step of attempt, believing that God can do something despite the apparent obstacles. By failing to make an attempt, Philip revealed his lack of faith. He allowed the problem to magnify in his mind, obscuring the potential for a miracle. We uncovered how the Philip mentality can have detrimental consequences on our faith-life. When we focus on problems and impossibilities, we amplify them and make them appear insurmountable. We become paralyzed by doubt and fear, preventing us from taking the necessary steps to experience God's power. To overcome the Philip mentality, we must: 1. Shift our focus: Stop dwelling on problems and start focusing on God's ability. 2. Make an attempt: Take a step of faith, even if it seems small or uncertain. 3. Trust in God's provision: Believe that God will provide the resources and support we need. 4. Embrace the possibility: Allow ourselves to believe that God can do the impossible. By overcoming the Philip mentality, we open ourselves up to the transformative power of faith. We become willing to attempt great things for God, knowing that he will reward our efforts and use them to accomplish his purposes.
