Today I discuss what I think is the true cost of doing a PhD and how to recover from it.

Main points:

To do a PhD, you ultimately sacrifice opportunities to:

- Gain real-world career experience outside of academic

- Build a professional network that you can leverage for your industry career

- Achieve a higher salary and invest for your future (i.e., retirement)

I also review ways to recover from each of these "losses" after you are done with graduate school.
