No matter how much I pushed on the gas pedal. I was stuck… flinging mud… I was going nowhere!

Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every day of the week! This is message #106 and I am Aaron Havens.

One of the companies I co-lead is in middle of completing a huge post construction clean for new hangars at an airport. It is a large job. Everything about the job is extreme. BIG. LARGE. Thousands and thousands of square feet. Lear jets. Private hangars that are more like She Shacks or Man Caves. I feel like I’m on Top Gun with Maverick. I have a sudden urge to buy a motorcycle and race airplanes. I digress.

As fun as this job is… it is very challenging. It has thrown so many obstacles at our team. The most recent obstacle was rain. Sure, while the rain storm came in, it was beautiful. It cooled down the day and calmed down the worksite. We were indoors and covered so it didn’t impact our work. As we worked past dark it was time to head out. In and out of this site is a temporary dirt ramp. Yeah you guessed it. As soon as we started to drive up the ramp, our van sank into the mud. Yep. One of those kinds of stuck. No matter how much I pushed on the gas pedal… I was just flinging mud and making the situation worse. I needed outside help. Call in the big rig tow truck!

Stuck. Mud flinging. Applied effort made it worse.

How about you. Are you in a situation where the more you try, the worse it gets? If you’re headstrong like me, if you’re an motivated leader like me… calling for help is one of the last things I want to do. In fact, it took me sleeping on the stuck situation before concluding that a tow truck is what was needed. Lets call in the experts so they can do what they do. All the scenarios I could come up with were either dangerous, going to cause damage or a big waste of time.

Where are you stuck flinging mud? Should you call in the big rig? Is it time to step back from the situation, put your pride down, consider ALL options, ask for help. Are you willing to consider other ways forward as you problem solve?

Thanks for calling in today. Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic! After the beep, what can you do today to resolve a “stuck” situation. Will you allow yourself 10 minutes to think about alternate ways forward? Are you willing to go about things different than you have been?
