Because the truth is, no one can really know their heart. The Bible tells us in Jeremiah that the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked, and that only God can know it. {Jeremiah 17:9-10} Plus Proverbs tells us,

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. {Proverbs 21:2}

That’s why it’s so crucial to turn to the Lord all the time and bring our hearts to Him. We need to ask Him to show us what we’re doing wrong, and where we are standing before Him. Yes, it’s going to take courage to do this, it’s not an easy prayer. But better that, than to stand before Him someday and realize too late that we’re lost; that we’ve been too fearful and cowardly to face Him when we had all the time in the world, and now it’s too late. The truth is though, there is nothing to be afraid of with the Lord because He loves us so much. There is also nothing He doesn’t already know about us. From the moment we took our first breath until the last, He knows our every thought, every spoken word and every deed. There is nothing He doesn’t know about us. The Bible tells us,

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. {Hebrews 4:13}
