I love the way Noah Webster defines it, “...that quality of mind which enables men to encounter danger and difficulties with firmness… valor; boldness; resolution. It is a constituent part of fortitude; but fortitude implies patience to bear continued suffering.” Be strong and of good courage Deuteronomy 31:6 KJV And what about to be courageous? Webster’s dictionary defines this as, “Brave; bold; daring; intrepid; hardy to encounter difficulties and dangers; adventurous; enterprising.” Be thou strong and courageous Joshua 1:7 KJV

I love the picture of what courage looks like through the word intrepid, “Literally, not trembling or shaking with fear; hence, fearless; bold; brave; undaunted;” Is that not what every hero looks like in the movies, in the sports arena and on the battlefield? It defines how we envision ourselves protecting our families, or those in our care or the weak and vulnerable. It shows how we live for a cause, so resolute and focussed, so strong and courageous! Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

Today, take a moment to remember, and may we never forget, those who gave it all! So many courageous men and women have given their lives so that we can live free. It will take courage for us not to waste that freedom. “It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom.” Galatians 5:13-14 The Message Bible

Questions:

  • How does the definition of courage compare to what you thought it meant?

  • In what way can you live out a courageous life today?

  • Who is the greatest example of courage that you know and why?
