In this conversation, Jacob and Scott talk about the difference between “I am” and “I feel” when talking about how we’re feeling, and learning to be present with our emotions without becoming them. They talk about not being committed to things playing out the same way they often played out in the past. How can we be intentional about creating different outcomes for holidays or seasons that have proven to be difficult? They discuss opinions versus truth, as well as the limitations created by all of the polarization in our world. When we get locked in our own certainty, we remain closed to new information and ideas. When we stay open to alternative ideas, we are likely to create more bridges of communication and understanding.

RESPONSE REQUESTED: The friends ask listeners to go to heyjacobhiscott.com and share a desire they’d like to create for this new year, as well as something they want to release.

Poem:

Go to the Limits of Your Longing, by Rainer Maria Rilke

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.
