As a mother of five and a grandmother of fifteen, author Karen Whiting has plenty of experience parenting. Karen's goal is to help grow wholesome families who embrace their faith. The Institute for Family Studies has concluded that shared prayer is the most powerful predictor of both relationship quality between family members and faith retention in children. Family devotional time exploring God's character together and making studying the Bible fun are ways to help your children learn to walk with the Lord.
For many families, the restriction of time in the midst of busy schedules makes intentional prayer time difficult. If you don't make an effort to connect your children with faith while they are young, it will be harder to assert faith as a priority as they get older and continue the habits they were initially instilled with. Most importantly, if you establish a daily routine to walk out your faith for yourself, you will personally demonstrate how to honor Jesus in the everyday mundane. The stronger your personal walk with God is, the deeper your children will understand the heart of God and His divine purpose for our life. As Karen suggests, these methods help your kids develop a true perspective of the Christian life, rather than a two-dimensional worldview. When our identity is rooted firmly in Him, the seed of faith a parent plants are eventually nurtured into trees, bearing much fruit.
