Darfurkonflikten betraktas idag som en av de värsta humanitära katastroferna i världen. Den 4 oktober 2010 fick den sudanesiska läkaren Halima Bashir (f. 1979) Anna Politkovskaja-priset. Bashir har länge agerat mot den lokala janjawid-milisens användning av våldtäkt som ett vapen. Detta har lett till oerhörda lidanden för den civila befolkningen och troligen har mellan 250 000 och 350 000 människor dött i det som betecknas som folkmord. Efter att Bashir protesterat utsattes hon själv för våldtäkt. Hon vägrar tystas, även efter att janjawid bränt hennes by.
