The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump this past Saturday highlighted a number of things—including the fragility of life and the inadequacy of our human efforts to explain how he survived.

Those who hold to a purely materialistic and naturalistic worldview have no answer but luck—which is we acknowledge—a major doctrine of secular theology. But Trump himself clarified the issue, posting on Truth Social that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.” Indeed, it was God and God alone, for God alone is the sovereign ruler of the universe.

The reality of God’s providence is something many Americans, and no doubt many Christians, think about with far too little seriousness. Let’s remember this, according to Scripture, our days are indeed numbered. And God alone knows the number of our days.

The course of American history was not changed last Saturday by the attempted assassination of President Trump. For that, the entire nation should be thankful.
