“One of the most disorienting things about getting married was that I didn’t feel transformed after the ceremony. I had expected (and hoped!) to feel wiser, more enlightened about what lay ahead. Instead we sat in the rented limo holding hands saying, “We did it!” as though what had taken place had not quite penetrated us.

It had, but so deeply and subtly that we didn’t notice at first. Perhaps that’s why so many cultures celebrate marriage with intense ritual. You need the line of demarcation of a new life clearly and deeply drawn. It takes a while to realize that although no special wisdom or other observable trait was conferred along with the marriage blessing, the two of you are irrevocably embarked on a journey unprecedented in your lives. That’s why we need the marriage ceremony: to set in motion the tectonic shifts within.”
