"Few women realize what great service they are doing for mankind and for the kingdom of Christ when they provide a shelter for the family and good mothering." The woman who wrote that is exactly right. Motherhood is underappreciated. And its fruit often takes decades to develop. So it is literally hard to realize what is happening. But, as she puts it "No one … has the same opportunity to mold minds, nurture bodies, and develop potential usefulness like a mother."But what is good mothering? The excellent wife of Proverbs 31 is a prime example. But in her dozens of virtues we might miss the main thing that she is to pass on to her children, namely her fear of the Lord (Prov. 31:30). It is this virtue, the overarching trait of "a sincere faith," that Paul exclusively honors in the mother of his younger colleague Timothy. And how Paul introduces this godly woman helps us understand the two things that were true of her that made her a gift to her son, and to the kingdom of Christ—her sincere faith, and the transference of her sincere faith.
