Featuring Andrew Perkins, Projects Director of Orkidstudio.

Orkid tackles design-build in a really holistic way by utilizing knowledge that already exists, introducing new ideas when appropriate, and increasing local representation on their teams. This group is doing remarkable work to benefit communities through innovative architecture and construction to create “social change through building.”

In this episode we hear from Andrew on why he made the leap from his home state of New York to the continent of Africa. Andrew has only been with Orkid and in Kenya for a year and a half, but he has a thoughtful view on Africa’s architecture economy and the West’s impact on Africa’s cultural identity.

Andrew is a competent architectural designer and builder, with extensive construction project management experience. From custom-built bicycle trailers and brick pizza ovens to full-scale renovations and new constructions, he has worked on a diverse range of projects in the US, Asia and Africa. Andrew beats the Nairobi traffic on his motorbike, enjoying the feeling of the wind in his hair. https://orkidstudio.org/team/

This episode was recorded on the fly in a cafe in Nairobi.
