Pravi was one of my first students when I moved to Pune. She is currently studying in Class XII at Indus International School. She plays the guitar, tennis, enjoys painting and is excellent with art work. In spite of her struggles with reading and writing she is currently looking to do her further studies in creative writing.

She considers creative thinking as her strength. She has a good memory as she has worked hard with that.

She struggled with reading, writing and spacing. Her teacher in class 4 realised her struggle and reached out to the remedial teacher in school. Then went for a formal diagnosis. Her diagnosis has helped her understand why she was facing her difficulties. The concessions like extra time helped reduce the stress and anxiety. This also helped level the field with her peers.

Awareness of mental disorders and learning disabilities is important. The school and teachers should be trained.

Tips for teachers: Reduced words for spellings. Non verbal prompts to ensure she is on the right track. Giving notes in advance so writing in the notebook before class as taking down notes is a struggle. Educate yourself about the various difficulties the students in their class have and what concessions they are eligible for. Teach spelling rules.

Tips for Parents: Stay calm. Listen to the counsellor and the remedial/special educator. Your child is already worked up so you being clam will help them calm down.

Tips for students: It is okay to fumble while reading. No one looks at you as lesser because you have a learning disability. Your brain is different from them and no one can think like you do. Friends will share notes as they knew it was a struggle.

Remediation was like a game class. It was a lot of fun. She still remembers the rules unconsciously. Learn in a multi sensory method. Use strengths to learn.

Learning disability is a different way of thinking and thought process. It is just as common as differences in gender, height, shoe size. Each one is as important as the other.
