Indie Case Files

Happy Room - Episode 2 - 03/05/2017

Happy Room was developed by Mana Potion Studios. It was released 12/19/2016. MP Studios was founded in 2011 and is based out of Kharkov, Ukraine and Vilnius, Lithuania. Their game library includes Happy Room, Wheely, Fly On (Mobile) and Top Archer (Mobile)

Opening Thoughts

Nate - I didn’t know what to expect coming into this game. However, after my first “room assembly” I was hooked. The game is incredibly fun for those of us with a destructively creative mind. Every time you unlock a new tool it adds a multitude of different combinations you can use to provide the “crash dummy” more ways to die.

Kory - With a title of Happy Room what do you really expect? I expected a happy game with fluffy bunnies and rainbows… this was far from that. If there is such things as a death simulator none of them have shown themselves to be on par with Happy Room. Ive never spent so much time thinking how to kill this rag doll guy and even people watching me trying to figure out more ways to fuck up the little guy.

Closing Thoughts

Nate - Happy Room is a game that is designed to allow the player to be creative in ways that I haven’t see in many other games. Every time I would construct a room and not reach the damage value I was going for, I was compelled to look over my design, remove some tools, and some other tools, and try again. Add that to the 4 rolling challenges you continually have, your creativity will continually be challenged. I enjoyed the game quite a bit. Kory - If you aint happy in this room then get the fuck out. You get to imagine what it would be like to have mines, jump pads, saws, guns, and any other trap you can think of to destroy this little dummy guy. What else do you need? You always have a new way to maim him and get more points for more devices and even upgrades for your traps. Overall if you want something to get some anger out on than this game is right up your alley. Just imagine the little guy is your boss or bully and have a ball.

Final Rating

Graphics

Nate - The graphics were very suited to the game. It was fun, cartoonish, and bright. I think if they game had a more realistic or darker tone it would have sat a lot differently with me. Kory - See this is where I had trouble with. I wanted so much more from this. I wanted the dummy guy to get torn apart and limbs flying everywhere when he fell into a saw or blown up by a bomb. Other than that it looks great but there was so much potential for more.

Gameplay

Nate - Fun and smooth. The game mechanics themselves are very simple. Place structures and press play. But the very basic features like slow-mo and fast forward really add to the fun of watching your guy get brutalized. Kory - Insanely simple to pick up and play. Very addicting gameplay but after you hit the abilities wall then I would assume it loses its fire.

Story

Nate - I would love to see some little short comic about why this room exists and what its purpose is. I think some creative people could have a lot of fun with it. Kory - No story at all but ant type of story most likely would have been hilarious.

Overall

Nate - While it’s not a game that will win any major awards, the game is fun, humourous, and entertaining. It’s a great way to kill some time when you don’t have a lot of time to sit or when you pull it up on a second monitor while something else is going on. Would love to see this game come to iOS and Android. Kory - For 5 bucks this is worth the buy. I had a blast unlocking all the tools and death devices to use in this little room and it kept me coming back for more. I agree with Nate that this game would be great on iOS or Android. Would have a much larger pull and audience. Most people are into sadistic shit like this anyways.
