Today we get to talk to Mike Thompson. Mike is the Community Engagement Champion at LIVESTRONG. He is a born-and-raised Austinite, but more importantly, he is a four-time cancer survivor. His first battle with cancer started when Mike was only ten, and since then he has endured more than 75 different surgeries. Mike is full of contagious positivity. I emerged from this interview on fire, and absolutely inspired.

Key Takeaways:

[1:42] Mike was born in 1985 at St. David’s Hospital.

[3:18] Mike’s mom got the call about his first cancer diagnosis while he was at soccer practice.

[6:14] How much did Mike understand about his leukemia diagnosis when he was ten years old?

[7:21] Cancer diagnosis can be a gift, but that’s hard to see in the beginning.

[8:31] It seemed like every time Mike was told he was cancer free, they would find cancer again. But Mike is well now at 31, when doctors once said he wouldn’t live to be 18.

[11:53] Mike’s mom was one of the biggest reasons he kept fighting for his life. She also chose some really great doctors to treat Mike.

[15:14] Lance Armstrong once came to visit Mike. Later, Mike researched LIVESTRONG while trying to get health insurance, and soon figured out that it was meant to be a big part of his future.

[20:50] Thank you to our Sponsor, the Papasan Properties Group.

[21:27] Mike became involved in competing in triathlons. That new hobby gave him unique opportunities to share his story.

[25:04] LIVESTRONG is not about curing cancer, it’s about helping survivors.

[30:08] When you find out someone has cancer, take the opportunity to empower them.

[32:24] Where does Mike take out-of-town visitors to experience Austin?

[37:00] Mike loves the Migas Taco from Vera Cruz.

[39:25] Next week we’ll talk to Jeff Sandefer who founded the Acton School of Business and the Acton Academy.
