Derick Johnson joins the podcast to discuss strategies for building self-confidence and overcoming trauma. He describes his experience growing up in an abusive, alcoholic home and how he turned to fitness as an escape. Finding inspiration in Tony Robbins' stories of childhood struggle, Derick became obsessed with training his body and mind. He eventually got certified as a personal trainer at age 15.
Derick shares how his mother nearly dying was the catalyst for dedicating his life to helping others. He then spent a decade immersed in personal development, studying psychology and focusing on being the supportive listener he never had. His advice for healing trauma includes identifying patterns, uncovering gifts/lessons from the pain, and using those to help others after processing emotions briefly.
Among his daily practices for resilience are morning routines to feel empowered and proactive, along with heat therapy like saunas for relaxation. Derick explains how remembering their ancestors' severe struggles helps motivate him when feeling uninspired. He also reflects on how even past mistakes provided valuable perspective that prepared him for challenges like the military.
Key lessons from his military service include team-building, leadership, and communication across diverse groups. To support loved ones' hurt, he stresses the importance of active listening without merely waiting to respond. Finally, Derick suggests creating a "badass list" of 10 peak memory moments to visualize during self-doubt to raise one's energy, vibration, and confidence through action.
