In today’s show we discuss efforts to rebuild in Paradise, California after the devastating 2018 wildfire that destroyed most of the town and killed 42 people. It focuses on the issue of home insurance affordability, with rates increasing 400-500% after the fire. We definitely feel sympathy for the survivors but also understand the perspective of insurance companies hesitant to take on such high risks again. Key points made include the fire was catastrophic, wiping out nearly all of Paradise and requiring extensive efforts to identify remains. - Survivors want to rebuild but insurance rate hikes make it unaffordable. One woman's rate went from $1,200 to $9,700. We’re conflicted on whether to feel sad, angry, or look for solutions. Understanding insurers not wanting to risk big payouts again and wondering if the universe is telling people this is not the right place to rebuild, despite emotional attachments. The state wants to improve building codes and thinking that free markets will make dangerous areas prohibitively expensive to live in may negate the need. We want to hear from you and I invite perspectives from survivors on why they feel Paradise is still the right place to be. Also seeking thoughts from others on if rate hikes are reasonable given the now demonstrated risk.
