In this episode of the International Security in the 21st Century we will be looking at the reasons why states enter into regional organisations. In the episode, we will be discussing;

    The economic reasons for joining a regional organisation (free trade zones, stepping-stone liberalisation etc.) The security reasons for joining a regional organisation (interdependence, and pooled security) The power reasons for joining a regional organisation (power over other states in a region, and power over external rival powers)

Throughout this episode we will be looking at different regional organisations as short case studies. The regional organisations that are covered in this episode are; The European Union, ASEAN, SAARC, The African Union, the OAU, and NAFTA.
