Author, Eulogy

This week, Ira spoke with Michael Laser, author of Eulogy. In this novel episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Michael talks about his life as a writer and when he discovered he wanted that life; how his new fiction book borrows elements from his father; how he disciplines himself to write each day; why fiction is his choice for writing; and how he mixes the solo part of writing with the social part of promoting his book.

Michael Laser has been writing fiction for 50 years. He earned a Master’s from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins, studying under John Barth and Leslie Epstein. He has supported himself with a ridiculous variety of jobs, including Good Humor man (for a day), radio adwriter, paralegal, secretary, grantwriter, ghostwriter, and writing instructor. So far, he has published seven novels (four for adults, three for adolescents), many short stories, and essays and features in the New York Times and other newspapers. Recently, he published The Word-Lover’s Lexicon: A Whimsical Collection of Uncommon, Amusing, and Useful Words (Including the Ones You Meant to Look Up But Didn’t). Michael Laser lives with his wife in Montclair, New Jersey; the kids are all grown up and on their own.
