Author, Estrellas: Moments of Illumination Along El Camino de Santiago

This week, Ira spoke with Suzanne Maggio, author of Estrellas: Moments of Illumination Along El Camino de Santiago. In this walking episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Suzanne talks about why she decided to walk along the El Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain; how she planned the walk; why you have to be open to letting go of the best plans and dealing with what’s right in front of you; walking yourself into shape; physical, spiritual and mental; why Spain supports that journey and provides infrastructure; the uniqueness about it; silence and reflection, where you create an opportunity for change to occur; why it left her changed; how her husband supported her during the solo walk; why she never used her phone while walking; the challenge of the walk becoming too touristy; some of the wonderful people she met on the walk itself; alternate routes on the El Camino de Santiago; why she decided to write the book (“it wasn’t about walking, it was about what happens when you’re walking”); and how she wrote it during COVID.

Suzanne Maggio is an award-winning author of The Cardinal Club – A Daughter’s Journey to Acceptance. A licensed clinical social worker, Maggio has helped hundreds of families improve their relationships by encouraging them to open their hearts and share their stories. She now trains the new generation of helpers as a university lecturer in Psychology, Counseling and Social Work.

Suzanne is the granddaughter of Italian immigrants, a passionate cook, frequent traveler and avid baseball fan. She lives in Northern California with her husband, where they raised their two sons and where they now manage two rambunctious dogs and a brood of demanding chickens.
