Author, James Bond And The Sixties Spy Craze

This week, Ira spoke with Thom Shubilla, author of James Bond And The Sixties Spy Craze. In this spyproof episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Thom talks about his fascination with spies and the sixties; why he didn’t want to write about it from a contemporary point of view; what Roger Moore originally thought of the idea of playing James Bond in films; why Ian Fleming is and remains the key “influencer” of our perceptions of spies; the surprising interest of President Kennedy in Fleming spy novels; how spy films and television series became a craze; and which James Bond movie kicked off the craze.

Thom Shubilla is the author of James Bond and the Sixties Spy Craze, which will be released by Applause in April 2024 and Primetime 1966-1967: The Full Spectrum of Television’s First All-Color Season released by McFarland in April 2022. He has written numerous articles and conducted reviews for Screem and Monster Bash Magazine.

Thom also is a producer of the forthcoming documentary about artist Drew Friedman by Kevin Dougherty, “Vermeer of the Borscht Belt.” Currently, he is a professor at Luzerne County Community College, in the Humanities Department.
