After our Oppenheimer chinwag we thought we’d better talk about the ‘other’ nuke: nuclear power plants, that is. Fission, baby! Atom-splitting for energy!
It comes up constantly as a solution to climate change. It’s baseload, it comes with really cool chimneys, and it’s a place where people like Homer Simpson can work, so why not deploy a few thousand of those babies and kick greenhouse gases squarely in the nuts?
Well while we are wanting to see carbon emissions reduced fast - this may not be the answer - and the real reason may surprise you. Let's just say - as we so often do - follow the money!
After all - how many net new nuclear power stations do you think the world has now compared to a few decades ago? Is it practical or genius? Do the economics stack up?
Strap on your lead-lined underpants and grab your Geiger counter, we’re going reactor-diving to find out!
And for the record, when we're doing real work and not podcasting, you'll find Dr Bruce, The Global Futurist presenting here and PJ applying his digital marketing genius here. Enjoy!
